Barack Obama has won the race to be the next president of the United States of America.

The Illinois senator will become the first black president in American history after the polls closed in California.

The west coast state, in which he was comfortably ahead in the voting, carries with it 55 votes, enough to see him win the 270 votes needed to win the presidency.

Huge numbers of Obama supporters cheered and celebrated at Grand Park in Chicago as the victory was called by the TV networks.

Victory was never really in doubt after the Democratic candidate took the key battleground states of Ohio, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Analysts are now predicting a very large margin of victory for Obama in his battle with Republican rival John McCain, in what has turned out to be a one sided vote.
